In Remembrance

Walter Leroy Drake

Walter (Walt) Leroy Drake entered into rest at Viewcrest Health Center in Duluth, MN on
September 3, 2024, at the age of 75. Walt had been on dialysis for the past 10+ years and
made the decision to enter into hospice in late August.

Walt was born in Duluth, MN on September 30, 1948 to Walter and Ruth (Gould) Drake. Walt
graduated high school in Duluth and was soon after drafted into the US Marine Corps. Walt was
stationed in Hawaii during his time in the military. Following his discharge from the Marine Corps
Walt returned to Duluth and began his work as an auto body mechanic at Vine’s Auto Body
where he worked until his retirement. Walt enjoyed many activities throughout his life such as
hunting, fishing, going on motorcycle trips, snowmobiling, playing (and most often winning)
cribbage with a glass of Crown, and making his perfect 4-4-2 margaritas for his friends at Oak
Lake campground where he spent many summers with his significant other Luanne and her
family.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, June and Violet; and his long time
significant other Luanne Appelwick. Walt is survived by the Roger and Cheryl Vine family; the
Appelwick family; the Gary and Lori Rutar family and many dear friends.

In honor of Walt’s wishes there will be no memorial service. His ashes will be laid to rest at the
Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery – Duluth during a private ceremony at a later date.

Walt’s family and friends would like to thank the staff at Viewcrest Health Center and St. Luke’s
Hospice for the compassionate care he received.
