Vyonne Annette Long, 82, passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital Wednesday, September 20, 2017 with her loving family at her side. She was born February 27, 1935 to Elmer and Reva (Brock) Houghtelin in Owatonna, Minnesota.

As a young woman, Vyonne sung with a travelling trio from Oregon to as far east as Anderson College, Indiana, where she first met the love of her life, Tom. She sung several years with the Duluth Symphony Choir, traveling to Europe and singing in Westminster Abbey. Vyonne lived in and held jobs in many places including: University of Chicago; Eugene, Oregon; San Francisco, Berkeley, CA, and Duluth. In Duluth, she had an amazing home daycare program full of music, books, art, nature, and swimming (every kid learned how to swim!). Vyonne retired from St. Louis County Social Services for which she was a secretary for about 20 years.

Vyonne was deeply caring, kind, open-minded and generous to all. Over the years, Vyonne cared for many family members in need for extended periods. She was a talented musician, vocalist, pianist, avid reader, seamstress, gardener, dedicated Democrat, and supporter of the city of Duluth as a wonderful place to live. Vyonne especially enjoyed her Glen Avon Book Club and her Loose and Limber swim groups. She attended the Unitarian Church in San Francisco, and in Duluth. Vyonne felt strongly about fair treatment of all people in the world and sought peace, unity and understanding. Vyonne’s bright and intelligent kind blue eyes conveyed her love of life and people. Most of all, Vyonne loved her large extended family and especially spending time with her grandchildren, of whom she was very proud.

She is preceded in death by her parents; son Eric Long; two grandchildren, Samuel Krebs, Laura Krebs; five siblings, Mavis Houghtelin, Lois Pope, Carol Purcell, Ronnie and Paul Houghtelin.
