Russell Dean Carew, age 62, of Brainerd, MN passed away on Friday, September 10th, 2021.
Born April 25th, 1959 in Midland, MI to James “Jim” and Joy Carew. Jim accepted a job with the Federal Aviation Agency relocating the family to Alaska, first to Fairbanks then to Anchorage where Russ spent his teenage years.
He enjoyed the outdoors and found a passion for aviation, crafting wooden planes and piloted his first solo flight at age 16. Russ attended Sowell Air in Tulsa, OK then obtained certifications to fly multiple aircrafts in Florida. In the early 1990’s he built a house in Nikiski, AK where he ran his small business “Windy Day” and created his collection of airplane whirly gigs.
In 1997 Russ moved to Brainerd, MN. He began working for The Brainerd Hotel in 2010 as Maintenance Supervisor. The Hotel closed its doors in 2014 and Russ watched over the property during its vacancy, ending in 2018. Purchased by Twin Cities Hospitality and renamed Quality Inn and Econo Lodge he embraced the role of Facility Manager. A dedicated and valued employee he made many wonderful friendships during his 11 years of service.
He spent his final 25 years of life with his significant other Carol Freeman by his side. A talented artist, whether it be from memory or heart, Russ painted landscapes of all the places he loved. He dreamt of one day owning a plane and flying again. Russ was a jack of all trades and will be greatly missed.
Preceded in death by his father, James Carew. Left to cherish his memory are: mother, Joy Carew; brothers, Robert Carew, Tom Carew; Sisters, Linda Carew, Susan Church and Tanley Martinez; significant other, Carol Freeman and her three daughters, Katherine Fels, Lynne Freeman and Rachel Dinsmore.
