Paul Malknecht passed away peacefully on September 17, 2023, after a courageous, seven-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family at the Solvay Hospice House.

He was born April 11, 1955, to Norbert and Betty (Sandquist) Malknecht in Duluth, MN and grew up in Proctor. After graduating from Proctor High School, he started his career with DM & IR, where he worked for 28 years. He enjoyed bartending in his free time and always drew a crowd.

Paul and Loni were classmates in high school and reconnected when he was helping a friend in Solon Springs. They were married on March 28, 2002, on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Upon retiring, they moved to Florida, where they could enjoy the warm sunshine, golf and make new friends. Together they were “livin’ the dream” while they created a fun vacation spot for their kids and grandkids to enjoy with them.

Some of his favorite hobbies were golfing, bowling, fishing, and traveling. He also loved watching the Vikings, Twins and Dukes. Paul loved spending time with family and friends, especially when he could cook or prepare something on his smoker. Every year Paul would make his homemade horseradish and pickled dilly beans. Paul loved searching for a good deal and always seemed to find a way to make it even better.

Paul will be sadly missed by his wife Loni, children Tami (Larry) Long and Brian Alexander, and his grandchildren, Reece and Penny.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Additional survivors include his sisters, Susie (Clarence) Nylund and Barb (Earl) Beaudin, a daughter, Kelly and her family, several nieces and nephews and many others who loved him. Paul had a soft spot for little dogs, especially his new furry Florida friends, Chloe and Abby.

The family would like to thank Chapters Health Hospice in Florida, and Essentia Hospice, and Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN for their compassionate care. Thanks also to Affordable Cremation & Burial for their help with the arrangements.

Per Paul’s last request, his family will celebrate his life at the Proctor Moose on Monday, September 25, from 4-7pm. Please bring your favorite memories of Paul to share with the lodge.
