Lyle Thomas (aka Toivo) Johnson, 78, of Duluth, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Ecumen ‘The Shores’ Assisted Living in Duluth. He was born January 3, 1936 to Gust and Iris (Oberg) Johnson in Port Huron, Michigan, but became a lifelong Duluth resident.
After graduating from Central High School in 1954 until retirement, Lyle was a proud 44 year member of Local 49 Operating Engineers. He became a crane operator with a keen eye for detail. He was also a member of Glen Avon Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and AAD Temple Shrine for over 40 years. He also enjoyed getting together with his Duluth Heights friends on Wednesdays.
Lyle enjoyed baseball at Wade Stadium from the time of the ’48 Dukes tragedy. He built boats and went out on the big lake frequently. Lyle was an honorary Velo Duluth member, biking over 3000 miles in a summer and losing 80 lbs. over the years. He also loved feeding wild birds, live trapping and relocating wild cats, and photography. Lyle had a great off-kilter sense of humor, and a generous and kind nature.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Patricia (nee Harvey) Johnson.
Lyle is survived by two sons, Jay (Shelly Shafer) Johnson,Lee (Liz) Johnson; nine grandchildren,Jennifer Davis, William Johnson, Brian Johnson, Sara Johnson, Serena Johnson, Mike (Rachel Graham) Johnson, Amy (Hakon) Gundersen, Andrea Johnson, Jacob Johnson; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers Todd (Jan) Johnson, Kerry (Judy Perry) Johnson; extended family and friends.
A time to greet friends will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the 12:00 pm Memorial Service, Saturday January 10, 2015 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 410 N Arlington Ave., Duluth MN, and then lunch.
