Visitation will be at 10am and funeral service at 11am on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Virginia. There will be a committal service on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at the Veterans Cemetery in Duluth at 11am.
John Gary Heikkila, 81, of Virginia and formerly of Tower passed away on Sunday, May 7th, 2023, surrounded by family at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay.
He was born on April 19, 1942 in Vermilion Lake Township to John and Agnes(Peltonen) Heikkila. He graduated from Embarrass High School. He then went on to Mesabi State Junior College and the School of Forestry in Grand Rapids. In 1966 he joined the United States Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam war. He was trained in linguistics and served as a Chinese Mandarin translator.
John was employed at US Steel-Minntac for 30 years.
John is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggy) of 50 years, son Corey (Jenny) of Rogers, daughter Julie of St. Paul, two grandchildren: Emily and Reed, brother Donnie (Lois) of Virginia, several nieces and nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, nephew and in laws.
