John Maynard Berglund (Jay) died on July 7th from complications due to Parkinson’s Disease. Born on September 19, 1949, Jay was the son of John and Agnes Berglund who introduced him to the Gunflint Trail and fishing and hunting at an early age. Jay loved the West Bearskin Lake cabin, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, music, reading, golf, softball, hockey, sports in general, trivia and history. At age 19, Jay was drafted into the Army and sent to Vietnam in 1969. He served for about a year in Vietnam and came home to be treated for severe Malaria. Serving in Vietnam became the eventual reason for his many health problems which diminished his life significantly.

Jay attended UMD and worked at various jobs. He retired after 23 years working on construction with Northland Constructors and was a member of Laborers Local 1091.

He spent the last years of his life at the Silver Bay Veterans Home where he received top notch care from health care providers, aides, cooks, social workers, advocates, recreation and nutrition specialists and everyone working at this special place. Jay’s family is greatly appreciative of the care he received at the Vets Home for his complicated medical diagnoses and challenging condition.

Jay is preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Berglund and his sister, Barbara Lund. He is survived by his sister, Joan (Alan) Peterson, niece Alexis Peterson, nephew Christian (Velvet) Peterson, and their children, nephews Dario ( Jeanne) Anselmo and Greg Anselmo, Rob (Maria Co ) Lund, their children and numerous cousins. He is also survived by Tres Lund, Kim Lund and Shauna McFeeley and their families as well as a special friend Diana Schweiger.

Jay had a lot of great friends who will miss him and with whom he shared many good times. They agree that Jay was a man with a big and gentle heart and could be a stubborn Norwegian, or Swede depending on the day. He was half Norwegian and half Swedish in his heritage. Annar Oustad, his grandfather who emigrated from Norway and Oscar and Elvira Berglund who both emigrated from Sweden helped make Jay into the person he became.

A gathering will be held at the Lester Park Pavilion from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 14th with light refreshments.
