Jane Tilton Shull


Jane Tilton Shull passed away on March 11, 2025, at the age of 89, in Duluth, Minnesota. Jane was born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1935.

Daughter of Elizabeth and John Tilton, Jane was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Harry Eugene Shull, and is survived by their three children, Chris Shull of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Susan Shull Aspite of New Hope, Pennsylvania, and Caro Shull of Duluth, Minnesota, 7 grandchildren, her bother John Tilton of Boulder, Colorado, and her sister Judy Kennedy of Pebble Beach, California.

Jane was graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology (1957), and then earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Kindergarten Education (1969) and a Masters of Education in Elementary and Kindergarten Education (1971) from the Pennsylvania State University. She taught elementary school in State College, Pennsylvania, Erie, Pennsylvania, and Duluth, Minnesota for almost 30 years, retiring in 2001. She loved teaching science, especially anything to do with space, Gifted and Talented, and preparing students for Odyssey of the Mind. She proudly wore her NASA flight suit after attending a teacher’s Space Camp.

Jane was renowned as the National Bicentennial Shoo Fly Pie Champion of Harris Township, Pennsylvania. As a Duluthian, she was active with Pilgrim Congregational Church, the Lakeview Garden Club and the Duluth Preservation Alliance. She enjoyed spending time with her dogs, competing in agility, book club, fine arts performances, family camping and canoeing trips, sailing, and traveling with her husband.
