Deanna (Frericks) Larson, 58, died of cancer on September 13, 2020. She grew up in Silver Bay where she was active in band, choir, and plays. Her brothers remember all too well how she expressed her emotions on the living room piano.

She attended college for a time at St. Cloud State University, spending a semester abroad where she embraced the people, culture, and language of Denmark. She briefly lived in St. Cloud and Minneapolis before returning to the Northshore where she met the love of her life, David Larson, another Silver Bay local. She and David ran a convenience store for several years, and Dee especially enjoyed employing her love of arts and crafts to decorate the store for the holidays. She also crocheted doll clothes and blankets, made boiled-wool slippers, and knitted sweaters and scarves for her loved ones.

While raising her four children, Dee returned to school and earned her degree in Early Childhood Development, becoming a fierce advocate for those on the autism spectrum. She then began working with young children at a Duluth daycare center, a career she loved until she became sidelined by metastatic breast cancer.

Dee weathered the travails of her illness for eleven years, from treatments to surgeries, to infections and pain management. Through it all her husband David, an LPN, patiently cared for her full-time, and her mother, Marilyn Frericks, was a constant source of strength and support. What sustained her was her faith and family, and the desire to make it to one more milestone: the birth of her first granddaughter, then her second, Becca’s high school graduation, Chelsea’s wedding, Ben’s new job, her first grandson, and Becca’s college graduation. Fondness for animals, especially Holland Lop rabbits and black labs, also brought her much joy.

Survivors include husband David Larson, sons Robert (Jenny) Larson and Ben Larson, daughters Kirstin (Steve) VanDoren, Chelsea (Joe) Allen, and Rebecca Larson, grandchildren Sonya, Nora, and Micah VanDoren and Piper and Nahnee Allen, her mother Marilyn Frericks, her brothers Mike (Julia) and Doug (Helen) Frericks.

She was preceded in death by her father Don Frericks and both her mothers-in-law: Nancy Larson and Ruth Larson.
