Bruce Darwin Mattila
January 24, 1936 - October 24, 2021

Bruce Darwin Mattila passed away in his home on Oct. 24, 2021, in Duluth, MN.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1936, in Virginia, MN. Bruce had a strong work ethic and held many jobs but enjoyed working as a food broker most of his life.
Bruce married his loving wife Betty Ann Mesedahl in 1957, and together they had six children: Sheree (Bob) McQuade, Bruce (Kathy) Mattila, Dana (Roger) Swor, Kevin (Julie) Mattila, Mark “Monk” Mattila, and Betsy (Bobby) Allen.
Bruce also has two sisters, Pat LaFreniere and Dana Emanuel, 20 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
Bruce loved to camp and fish with his children as well as coach their hockey teams. Lovingly known as “Papa,” he also enjoyed spending time at the cabin with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Alaska.
Bruce was an avid reader; there were not many books he did not know about, especially historical novels, and he loved talking about them with his grandchildren.
