Robert C McGreevy
December 23, 1937 - January 24, 2025
Robert C. McGreevy, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and innovative business leader, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025. He was 87.
Born December 23, 1937, to Leo and Gladys McGreevy, Robert grew up in Duluth, where he attended Duluth East High School and later graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in Business Administration. After graduating, Robert joined the trainee program at Duluth Glass Block. He became known throughout the industry as a “merchandiser”. His understanding of business fundamentals, passion, industry expertise and work ethic earned him the role of President of the Glass Block as well as having oversight over four other Mercantile stores in North Dakota and Montana. He believed in giving the customer what they wanted.
It was at UMD where he met Florence Heide. Robert and Florence married and raised four children, Mark, Susan, John and Michael. Family time was often spent at the family cabin in the summer and downhill ski racing in the winter.
After retirement, he cherished his role as Grandpa. With eight grandchildren, there were always enough for teams of hockey, softball and volleyball. Whether it was on the hockey rink, the ski hill, the softball field, or the volleyball court, Robert was right there with them, always ready for a game.
A man of varied interests, Robert studied history and finance and loved the outdoors, especially downhill and cross-country skiing, fishing, and windsurfing at South Padre Island in Texas. His quick wit and dry humor made him a memorable figure to those who knew him.
Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence; his brother, Richard (Marjorie); children: John (Kim) McGreevy, Michael (Cheryl) McGreevy and Susan (Michael) Kildahl; grandchildren: Grant (Catherine), Reid, Elise, Quinn and Juliet Kildahl; Trevor, Riley and Thomas McGreevy. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark McGreevy.
A private family service will be held at a later time.
Robert will be greatly missed. His legacy of hard work and sense of humor will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
