Lyman S Hughes
July 17, 1942 - July 23, 2025
Lyman Stuart Hughes, born July 17, 1942 to Winfield and Nellie Hughes has passed suddenly on July 23, 2025. Born and raised in Proctor Minnesota, he graduated from Proctor Sr. High School and went on to Eveleth Community College to learn his trade in Typesetting and Printing. His first job was at the local Piggly Wiggly as a grocery bagger, and then on to Davison Printing after college. Being allergic to print ink, this was a short lived career. He then started driving semi truck, hauling grain. Wanting to be home more, he decided to start his own business sandblasting and painting and minor trailer repair. After a few years, he decided to go back to trucking over the road, working for Jeff Foster Trucking which he did for the next 31 years. Durning his life, he enjoyed horses. Starting out playing polo, which got him hooked on horses. He enjoyed training horses and trail riding with the family. Early in life, he met and married Donna Franik and had three children who all were horse enthusiasts. He divorced Donna, and Married Marilyn Heglund, they were married until death.
During his life, he enjoyed old western movies, boating and fishing with his brother and Marilyn. He enjoyed working on creative projects with Marilyn, and walking their dog(s). He still had his Massey Harris 444 diesel, and his trains. He enjoyed model trains, and when he retired, he started volunteering at The Train Depot in Duluth. Here he got the privilege to learn how to work on real trains, as well be the conductor of the O gauge model train display for several years, before moving on to assist in opening a train museum in Proctor where he grew up.
He will be remembered for his lists, his cowboy rain hat, his gruff humor and endless love and support for his family. His favorite saying was: Too soon old, too late smart.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother Dave. Survived by his Wife Marilyn, his first wife Donna Hughes, Son Dale Hughes(Lisa), Daughter Tammy Hughes, Son Randy Hughes(Tammy) and 2 bonus children Carrie Ann Kinnear(John) & Miles Differding(Lynn). A borther in law Dick Franik, Sister in Law Jeannie Differding & Linda White. And he was blessed with many grand children and great grandchildren.
