Marilyn Larson passed away on December 22, 2025 at Essentia Health – St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota due to complications of a stroke. Born in Denver, Colorado on April 18, 1943, Marilyn lived a life defined by curiosity, care for others, and a deep commitment to children and learning. She was the only child of Guy Barton and June McKee (Keller), and grew up in Denver, where she attended Denver West High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University, where she met her lifelong partner, Bill Larson, while both were working at the Student Union. Their partnership would span 63 years and form the foundation of a rich family life. Originally enrolled in journalism at CSU, Marilyn soon discovered her true calling and shifted her studies to education, setting the course for a pioneering career. She later earned a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Wisconsin–Stout, after moving to Minnesota with her family in 1976. A visionary educator, she helped launch Minnesota’s first Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program in Duluth, leaving an enduring mark on how families and young children are supported in the State. Marilyn became the Director of Early Childhood for the Duluth school system and also worked for the State of Minnesota in a new pilot program, Kids Plus, advancing programs for youth and families. She later shared her expertise as a teacher at the University of Minnesota Duluth. St. Scholastica, and the University of Wyoming, inspiring students and colleagues alike. A lifelong learner, Marilyn was endlessly curious, rarely without a book or a podcast, and always eager to understand the world and herself a little better. She also loved to help others with their own self-discoveries, earning several coaching certificates throughout the years. These experiences served her well in several advisory and consulting roles throughout her career, always focused on improving lives of young children and families in her local communities. Marilyn loved Lake Superior and the mountains deeply, both places that brought her peace and renewal, especially stands of aspen trees in the Rocky Mountains. She and Bill moved many times over the years, living in Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Every new location offered different experiences and learning opportunities, and natural environments to explore. Above all, Marilyn was a devoted partner, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her beloved partner Bill Larson; her children, Kiiri (Bruce) Schoenberg and Kris (Christine) Larson; and her cherished grandchildren: Bjorn and Johannes Larson and Anja and Liam Schoenberg. She delighted in each of them and treasured time spent together. Marilyn will be remembered for her intelligence, warmth, curiosity, love of laughter, and the quiet strength with which she shaped the lives of others. Her legacy lives on in her cherished family and friends, students she taught, countless families she supported, and the deep love she gave to those in her life. There will be a family service scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a card with your favorite memory of Marilyn or contributing to an organization of your choice that serves youth and families. | |
