Marlene Joyce Smith Marlene passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, January 19th, 2025, at Solvay Hospice Care, surrounded by her loving family. Born February 20th, 1939, Marlene lived a life filled with both challenges and triumphs. Predeceased by her father, Edward John Loonam; her mother, Dagney Violet Borin; and her brother, Derald DeClute, Marlene leaves behind a legacy of strength and unwavering love. She is survived by her devoted husband, Loren E. Smith; her children, Rachel Messer, Sheri Lombardi, Joy Smith, Rory Smith, Jeanne Abrahamson, and Kandi Anderson; and a large and loving extended family including numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Her brothers, Richard Niemi and Ed Niemi, and her sister, Sheila Mattson, also survive her. Marlene’s early life presented significant hardships, yet she persevered with remarkable resilience, raising two young children largely on her own. She was a woman of unwavering strength and deep affection, a testament to the idea that great things come in small packages. Her vibrant spirit shone through in her favorite color, lavender, and in her passions: crossword puzzles, cooking, baking, and most importantly, her cherished family. A celebration of Marlene’s life will be held in West Duluth on Friday, January 24th, 2025..
