Dr. Edward Jimenez, 91, died January 2, 2017, in Duluth MN.  He was born in New York City, New York, on September 8, 1925 and married Maxine Hammerberg on February 28, 1948, in Chicago Illinois.

He earned his BS degree from the University of Puerto Rico, his MD degree from Loyola Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, and his PhD in pharmacology from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.  His medical specialty was Neurology.

He first practiced medicine at the Fajardo District Hospital in Puerto Rico.  Later he joined the Veteran’s Administration System and practiced medicine in Minneapolis, MN; Albany, NY; and Milwaukee, WI.  While practicing and teaching in Minneapolis he also coauthored a textbook with Hildred Schuell on the subject of aphasia.

In 1972 Edward and his family moved to Duluth where he joined the Duluth Clinic and practiced neurology until retiring in 1986.  Along with his medical practice he taught neurology at the University of Minnesota Duluth Medical School where he was loved and respected by his students and colleagues receiving many accolades and awards.  Students would often comment on his wonderful sense of humor and his misinterpretations of some American idioms.

His adventurous spirit and thirst for knowledge about different cultures led him and Maxine to travel extensively throughout Europe, South America, and Canada.  Music was an important part of his life and he especially loved his symphonies and concertos, Beethoven being one of his favorite composers.  He felt most at home while camping and paddling the waters of the BWCA near his cabin on Lake McDougal where he and his family spent summers together.  His love of the forests instilled a strong stewardship for the woods where he could be found planting a variety of evergreens wherever he lived.

Edward is survived by his wife Maxine, his children Nancy Jimenez, Janet Arenson, Yvonne (Michael deceased) Mehring, Michele Jimenez (Richard Appelbom), Ann (Bradford) Allen, and Michael (Ruth) Jimenez.  Grandchildren include Anita Arenson, Clara and Iris Appelbom Jimenez, Bryson and Trent Allen, and Aidan and Shewaye Jimenez.

He was preceded in death by his son Edward and grandson Pearce Allen.

A visitation will be held at the Benedictine Health Center Chapel at St. Scholastica on Saturday, January 14, 2017, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., followed by a private family service starting at 1:00 p.m..
