Dorothy W. (Comstock) Anway, 76, died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth February 27, 2019. She was born July 2, 1942 to John and Audrey (Roth) Comstock in Duluth.

Dorothy attended Duluth East High School and the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where she was among the rare women to earn a degree in mathematics in 1964. She married Allen Anway of Cloquet July 11, 1964 in the old FUMC.

Aside from a short period in Chicago while she supported Allen in earning his PhD in physics, Dorothy was a lifelong resident of the northland, returning to live in Superior, Wisconsin in 1969. She taught mathematics for much of her life, eventually earning a PhD in mathematics in 2001 from the Union Institute of Ohio and ending her teaching career at the University of Wisconsin – Superior. After retirement she gained much joy working with children at Lake Superior Elementary School as a beloved tutor of mathematics.

She was an active member of the community and spent 15 years on the DTA Board of Directors representing Superior, served as President of the Superior League of Women Voters, and was a lifelong member and supporter of First United Methodist Church in Duluth. She was passionate about building a better world through her political and volunteer work.

Dorothy expressed her creative side through her talents as a seamstress and support for the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra. She encouraged her children to study music as well as math and science. Dorothy was an earnest, diligent, and faithful woman whose strong personality will be dearly missed by those who loved her.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Allen; three daughters, Carol E. Anway (Charles Martin), Karen V. Anway (Edward Weston), and Ruth E. Anway (Steve Wirtz); three grandchildren, Lilian Martin, Eleanor Weston, and Briar Weston; three sisters, Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Comstock, Carolyn Pesheck, Virginia ‘Ginny’ Schuelke; many nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends.

A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at First United Methodist Church, 230 E Skyline Parkway, Duluth. There will be a time to greet friends an hour prior and a reception-lunch to follow, Rev Jeanine Alexander officiating, services by Affordable Cremation & Burial.
