A memorial service will be held on 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 19, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Duluth, visitation will be at 12:00 pm.

Donald G. Whitby 92 passed away in his sleep Friday December 21, 2018 at the Benedictine Living Community in Duluth. Donald was born April 2, 1926 to George W and Alice (Barrett) Whitby in Duluth Minnesota.

Don Graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1944 and immediately joined the Army Airforce and served proudly in World War II. He was employed by Williams Welding supply for 32 years as a service and salesman.

He loved spending time with his family and friends. Playing, coaching and watching sports, camping and spending time at the Lake. He loved life and was an example to everyone on how to look to the future with joy. He was always active volunteering in the community especially after he retired. Don coached youth hockey for over twenty years at the Woodland hockey program and then as an assistant on the JV team at Duluth Central. He was very active in the Kiwanis and Special Olympics founding the local power lifting program. He also volunteered for the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, Light House for the blind. In 2004 he was nominated for the Duluth Hall of Fame recognition.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and by his Wife and best friend of 67 years Alice “AJ Whitby in 2017.

He is survived by his sister in Nevada, Delores Gilmore and his two Children , Jane(Bob) Mayne of Hollister MO., Dale (Cathy) Whitby of Superior; grandchildren, Chad(Cheryl) Mayne, Jason Mayne, Patti Mayne, Sara(Adam) Rivet, Keith(Amy) Whitby, Kevin (Sandy) Whitby, Kate Whitby; great-grandchildren, Stephen Troje, Greg(Liz) Troje, BriAnne Troje, Zach Mayne, Abby ,Hannah, Seth and Maisie Whitby; great-great grandchildren, Savannah, Tristan and Conner Troje.

A memorial service will be held on January 19, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Duluth where Don was an active member for most of his life. Visitation will be at 12:00 pm with the service to follow at 1:00pm.
