Mary L. Hyvonen, 66, passed away gracefully Sunday March 22, 2015 after a brief, brave battle with cancer. She was born November 19, 1948 to Archie Jr. and Doris (Maghan) Randall in Duluth.

Mary grew up in the west end, and graduated from Denfeld High School class of 1966. She married Rodney ‘Rod’ Hyvonen on December 8, 1973. Mary enjoyed a variety of jobs, prioritizing being a homemaker when she had her two daughters. After her girls were grown, she dedicated 16 years as a loyal employee at Chester Creek Dental.

Mary was a woman who was elegant in a simple way. She enjoyed walks in nature with her husband, her morning coffee, warm summer breezes, beautifully served meals, and moments shared with friends and family. She was a best friend to many due to her generous and caring nature. Her children and grandchildren were the source of her pride and joy. She rightfully earned the name “Grandma Queen Mary,” as she devoted her heart and soul to her grandchildren. Mary’s legacy is one of selfless service and pure love.

She is preceded in death by father Archie Randall Jr., and sister Sue Slabodnik.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Rod; two daughters Kelly (Barry) Chastey, Laurel Hyvonen; five grandchildren Keegan, Parker, and Luci Chastey, Jonah and Aida Engebretson; mother Doris Randall; two sisters Barb Silver, Alice Pavelich, and brother Archie ‘Butch’ Randall III; extended family and many dear friends. We would like to extend a deeply sincere and wholehearted thanks to Dr. Mikhail Perlov and the nursing staff at St. Luke’s Hospital for the exceptional love and care of Mary and her family.

Visitation will begin 10:00 am prior to the 11:00 am Funeral Service Friday March 27, 2015 at Peace United Church of Christ, 1111 North 11th Ave E, Duluth. Rev. Kathy Nelson officiating; there will be a luncheon followed by interment at Forest Hill Cemetery. Services by Affordable Cremation & Burial, 218-491-7011, affordableduluth.com.
